THE WONDER DOWN UNDER
Last week Raechel and I attended the Marcus Evans HR Summit in Queensland as sponsors. I want to write more about that later, but the stand out message during the three day summit came from The Honourable John Howard, Australia’s former Prime Minister.
He talked about the growth of self belief and self confidence in the Australian people with a surety that delivered a powerful message to us all. For those of you who travel the Tasman regularly I am sure you will have experienced this personally in any business encounter – the Australian people are solid in their belief about themselves – even if they come third, they still believe they have won!
It is a learning experience to be in Sydney and have it happening all around you and can be invigorating for the soul.
Mr Howard also talked about the learning from leadership (and I am sure he has learned a lot himself in the last few years) and he defined a good leader as someone who knows what is the right thing to do OR someone who listens and then decides but that understanding the impact of each decision is what is most important.
He told us all that Australia is in fact, the Wonder Down Under! What a fantastic phrase – it resonated with me and has stayed with me since. And the question I have for you all is how do we bring something like this to life in New Zealand? How do we gain a self belief and self confidence that is unstoppable, just like our friends that live on our doorstep?
